The Kitchen: Just Before Twilight

She stood in the kitchen
          for fifteen minutes
trying to figure out why she was there.

The time had come to make a decision.  Did she leave
          and admit defeat
or stay and try to figure out the purpose of her being here?

She was not old enough to be forgetting things
          yet
and she had to prove her mettle.

Senility was not an option. That,
          dear friends,
was for old people.  The decision was to stay.

She had to figure it out.  So now,
          with that settled,
decision made.  Done.  Wait -- why was she in the kitchen?
