Dream of a Dream of a Youthful Dream

"In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream."
- Edgar Allen Poe, "A Dream Within A Dream"

Could be that we are not awake
but rather sleeping through our days
zombies not consuming flesh
but coffee, soda, sugar high
propel us on through the mundane
the memories imprint upon
a phantom recollection of
a day before we marched in vain
alas those days under the sun
in a vision, or in none

seemed real to me, or so I thought
the memories although they fade
recalling hills and days outside
with pine trees looming close behind
the chain link surrounds the yard
within the confines we did run
or so I thought, seemed real to me
the spider webs I brush away
the details cannot recall one
-- Is it therefore the less gone?

It's not a question existence
can be or not to one's person
but more a fact that history gone
need not be recalled to have passed
need not be heard to leave a scream
and while the echo may resound
the words no longer understood
a blow against our self-esteem
All that we see or seem

fades alongside colors new
and still we try to seek the truth
was there a day before today?
One when we ran as fast as we could
laughing at each other, dodging shadows,
chasing the sun from beam to beam
I can't recall but now I must
I focus all my energy, but failure blocked attempts
Today's obsession, that youthful scheme
is but a dream within a dream
