she's crying, and I know it is my
fault, but still somewhere in the
back of my mind platitudes are
bell-ringing my skull and I hear
that version of the Stones by
the full chorus of voices (children's choir?)
"You can't always get what you want"
and I smile sidelong, just a bit, at the woe
knowing fully that the tantrum
fails to teach with the same kindness

and I help to console, but not cajoled
so just maybe one day there will be
the understanding of what she needed
