He looks up one last time, bloated marble eyes
squinting, egg yolks popping from sockets
as the light grows velvet dim
and he tries to recall what it looked like
from outside the darkness.
But in the hole it is Vegas-time, no clocks
reminding the seconds ticking away
of a life that is always too fleeting.
