Between the lines, carefully crafted,
a crosshatch begins, line after line
carefully sketching a plaid patchwork
of fabric, thumb-knuckle smudged
a break, sharp pointed retrace borders
index-finger point-on-side
broad graphite spread, pushing
plaid sketchwork to oblivion
darkening but lighter than the outline
until she sees the perfect shade of gray
